At the University of Bremen, Faculty of Production Engineering (FB04) in the Department of Mechanical Process Engineering (FG01), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lutz Mädler is seeking to fill the following scientific position:
Research Assistant (PhD student) (f/m/d)
Salary level 13 TV-L
Temporary for 36 months (according to § 2 WissZeitVG) full-time (39,2 hours)
Starting date: at the earliest possible date
In the field of “modelling and simulation of coupled multiphase systems”. The focus of this ambitious project is on improving current fundamental models and methods in CFD-DEM frameworks. The project builds on recent breakthroughs in rigorous, mesh-independent formulations of hybrid Lagrange-Eulerian models and simulation methods for coupled three-phase simulations. The Department of Production Engineering at the University of Bremen is known for its cutting-edge research in the fields of multiphase simulation and nanoparticle production with their use in various applications and the design of reactors/machines for specific materials technology. The Department of Production Engineering works closely with the Leibniz Institute for Materials-Oriented Technologies (IWT), an independent interdisciplinary research institute focusing on materials science, manufacturing engineering and chemical and process engineering.
Aufgaben
In this position, you will work on fundamental models and methods in the field of multiphase flow with a particular focus on applications to simulating fluid-particle interacting systems. In this project you will learn about new numerical simulation methods built on a rigorous foundation derived from discrete differential geometry which can be used to solve previously intractable problems in the field. You will build on experimental libraries for developing new solvers with various applications domains in physics and engineering systems. A particular focus of your work will be on multiphase fluid systems interacting with nanoparticle agglomerates.
Profil
- Completed scientific university degree (Master's/University Diploma) in the fields of engineering (process engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering and/or aerospace), physics and/or applied mathematics or comparable subject area.
- Good knowledge of programming (Python).
- A strong background in numerical methods is an advantage, especially involving methods for the simulation of partial differential equations.
- A background in at least undergraduate level fluid dynamics is essential.
- A background in differential geometry is beneficial, but not required.
- Excellent academic record and ability to work in a team and independently.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with communication skills in German helpful.
Wir bieten
You will have the opportunity to work independently in innovative research areas such as multiphase flow and simulation of fluid-nanoparticulate systems under the close guidance of experts in their field. You will work on establishing a pioneering method using modern simulation techniques. As part of your research work, you will have intensive contact with national and international research institutions and universities through collaborations, visits and conferences. We offer a team-oriented, future- and practice-oriented research environment with the opportunity for scientific qualification.
Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has retained its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since it was founded 50 years ago. With a broad range of subjects, we combine exceptional performance with a great potential for innovation. As an ambitious research university, we stand for the approach of research-based learning and a strong focus on interdisciplinarity. We actively shape scientific cooperation worldwide in a spirit of partnership.
Today around 23,000 people learn, teach, research and work on our international campus. In research and teaching, administration and operations, we are firmly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice and climate neutrality. Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to try new things, in supportive cooperation, in respect and appreciation for one another. With our study and research profile and as part of the European YUFE network, we assume social responsibility in the region, in Europe and the world.
The university is family-friendly, diverse and sees itself as an international university. We therefore welcome all applicants regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.
As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in the knowledge.
Severely disabled persons with essentially equal professional and personal qualifications are given priority.
